Cyn (2007)

Cyn

Cyn is the second short film by Alex Ferrari that I've had the pleasure of reviewing (also check out his other short: Broken).  In my review of his last short, I talked a lot about the surprisingly good quality of the film.  Broken  wasn't quite the level of a major studio product, however it was not only better than any of the other no-budget films that I've seen, but also better than most low budget films and television shows.  Mr. Ferrari just stepped it up a notch with this one.  The quality of the filming, acting and editing of Cyn is just as good as any major, big budget film and this guy did it in 6 days for under $1,000!  Sure, it's only 5 minutes, but multiply that by 20 and you have a 100 minute film shot for $20,000.  Hiring Alex Ferrari to make a major motion picture seems like an obvious decision to me.  Someone needs to give him $20,000 and leave him alone to make a movie.

So what is Cyn?  This is an action short about a hot chick who at first seems to be a captive, but turns out to have put herself in the situation to get to her captors.  There's not a lot of story (I mean, come on, it's only 5 minutes), but it's full of action.  Stephanie Michaels plays the lead (Cynthia) and does a great job of turning from sacred captive to dominant heroine in one shot.  Josh Randall and Frank Rodriguez are excellent and the clueless captors.  Derek Latta makes a brief appearance as the mysterious "Daddy" who is allied with Cynthia.  I'm sure that this short is now at the top of all of their resumes.  The music is actually really good as well.  Too often, no budget filmmakers end up using some friend with more musical equipment than talent to score their film.  I understand that with no budget, you're often stuck with whatever you can get for free, but I don't know if they realize how much a good soundtrack can improve a film.  No need to worry about that here.  The soundtrack is 100% professional.  A company called Numb Robot did an excellent job on the titles and credits.
Because the film is so short and to the point, there really isn't much more to say about the story itself, but I can't say enough about how impressed I am with the quality!  Congratulations Alex, you are officially a kick ass indi filmmaker!
