Exit 38 (2006)

Exit 38

Exit 38 is a low budget vampire movie by Star Energy Productions.  The plot is relatively basic, a vampire comes into a small town in the middle of nowhere (off of Exit 38) and takes over the local strip club.  A couple of cops (a son-in-law and his father-in-law)  who can't stand each other team up to take out the vampire and avenge the death of their wife / daughter.  What makes this movie different from many of the low budget vampire movies out there is the caliber of several of the actors in the film.  They got Martin Kove to play the cops' boss.  Martin Kove has been in over 150 different TV shows and films (including dozens of episodes of Cagney and Lacey alone), but I'll always think of him as the tough guy Cobra sensei from The Karate Kid; "Defeat does not exist in this dojo!"  Exit 38 also features James Hong (if you don't recognize the name, you'd certainly recognize the face) who's been in over 350 TV shows and films...including Cagney and Lacey.

The plot isn't very groundbreaking; a vampire comes to town, a couple of people know about him, find him, and eventually kill him, but there are other aspects of the film that make it stand out from the others.  Several of the fight scenes are better than average for a low budget film.  In addition to the impressive cast, this particular vampire movie also includes a large body count and quantity of topless scenes.  Although they aren't very gory, there are around a dozen kills in the film and since it takes place in a strip club, there are also a lot of topless women.  The filming is about what you'd expect from a low budget film.  The audio is consistent and overall pretty good.  The editing isn't bad either.  If you like vampire movies with a lot of neck biting and nudity, Exit 38 has plenty of what you're looking for!  Plus, I don't want to give it away, but there is an interesting twist at the end of the film that I didn't see coming and that I've certainly never seen before in a vampire film.

Gore-o-meter rating: 2 out of 5
(around a dozen kills with some blood, but overall not a lot of gore)

Skin-o-meter: 4 out of 5 (lots of topless women)
