The Road (2007)

The Road

The Road is a 5 minute short film by written, directed and produced by Owen Thomas.  There are two things that make it stand out from many of the other short films that I have watched.  First, the quality of the filming is nothing short of amazing.  The entire thing is beautifully shot, extremely well lit and had great image quality.  The shots are all framed well, the actors are expressive without using dialog and, with one exception, the editing is great.  The second thing that makes The Road stand out is the ending.  I won't give away the ending because you should probably just watch the film yourself, but I will say that if the end character had held up a roll of Mentos, The Road could have been the best Mentos commercial ever!

There is no dialog in The Road, just a musical score which is very well written and fitting.  The story is told visually and gives us a look at one particular path taken by karma.  Other than one pair of shots at the end of the film that are out of step with each other, everything about this project is done completely professionally.  If this is intended to be a example of what Mr. Thomas is capable of doing in the film world, I'd say he's has an excellent piece for his portfolio!
