Thong Girl 3: Revenge of The Dark Widow (2007)

Thong Girl 3

Director Glen Weiss seems to have created a media frenzy with his latest release, Thong Girl 3: Revenge of the Dark Widow.  However, the frenzy isn't about any of the content of the film.  It's all because some of the filming was shot in the office of Mayor Don Wright who was the actual mayor of Gallatin, Tennessee.  Apparently some people thought it was inappropriate to use the mayor's office to shoot a film about a superhero in a thong.  I personally think it's hilarious!  Sure, it's a movie about a chick in a thong, but it would probably get a PG-13 rating if it were rated.  There's no sex, nudity, blood or serious violence.  In fact, except for the word 'ass' there's no profanity. There is a good bit of sexual innuendo and, of course, there is a girl in a thong.  Apparently that's enough to upset a lot of people.  Congratulations to Mr. Weiss for getting his indi film in the news!

Aside from all the crazy media hype caused by the Mayor's office filming, I haven't read much about this film.  That's a shame because Thong Girl 3 is an entertaining movie.  The Thong Girl character (played by Leah Adcock) is a southern belle superheroine living in Tennessee.  She and her hairstylist sidekick Boxer Brief Boy live by the motto, "If you do wrong, you'll answer to the thong!" Most of the characters are over the top and completely outrageous.  The film has the same charm and camp as the old Sid and Marty Krofft productions of the 70s.  Although the Krofft classic Electra Woman and Dyna Girl immediately comes to mind, many of the supporting characters in Thong Girl 3 remind me of the zany goofballs from other Krofft productions like The Bugaloos, Far Out Space Nuts and Dr. Shrinker.  For those of you too young to remember the world of Sid and Marty Krofft, a less accurate point of reference might be Pee-Wee's playhouse or possibly the 60s Batman series.  However, neither of those shows really had the same kind of kooky characters as the Krofft shows that seem to have been a major influence on Weiss.

The quality of the film is relatively low budget.  However, because of its similarity to the old Krofft shows, it was easy for me to watch without thinking about the quality.  Some of the effects used are silly, but that just fits the mood of the movie.  The acting of the supporting cast really adds a lot to the film.  The story of Thong Girl 3 is based around a villain named The Dark Widow (played by Lauren Benjamin) who wants to take over Nashville and turn all of the country superstars into rappers.  With the help of her sidekick Boxer Brief Boy (Tony Domenico), the bumbling genius Dweeble (Martin Brady) and a magical thong that allows her to shoot a laser out of her butt, Thong Girl saves the city from destruction.  Because I have not seen Thong Girl 1 or 2, I felt a little bit like I had missed some of the story, but the story is basic enough that it didn't really matter much.  If you are looking for Thong Girl 1, it comes as a special feature of the Thong Girl 2 DVD.  Thong Girl 4 is currently in production with a new lead actress; the former Playboy Playmate Audra Lynn.

Gore-o-meter rating: 0 out of 5 (No gore)

Skin-o-meter: 1 out of 5 (There's no nudity, but the lead character is in a thong)
